Maloy Wins 184 and Ayala Takes Fourth at 165 at the Scott Viera Invitational
BRISTOL, R.I. (December 11, 2021) – The wrestling team headed to Roger Williams University to compete in the Scott Viera Invitational where Keon Ayala took fourth at 165 and Charlie Maloy won the 184-weight class.
Maloy opened the day with a bye in the first round and then moved on to the quarterfinals to face McCullough of Bridgewater State. Maloy defeated McCullough by a 7-6 decision to advance on to the semifinals. In the semis, Maloy faced teammate Tyreece Cherival. This was a close battle where Maloy came out victorious 4-3 to advance to the finals. In the finals, Maloy wrestled Collazo of Bridgewater State. Maloy won via fall in just 1:16 to win the 184-poud weight class.
Ayala also opened the day with a bye into the quarterfinals where he challenged Golner of a local wrestling club. Ayala fell 11-2 to be moved into the consolation bracket. His first match in the consolation bracket was against Hussein of Sacred Heart. Ayala won in a 16-1 tech fall to move onto the next round. There he faced Wolkner of Roger Williams where he won via fall in just 1:01 to move onto the consolation semifinals. In his next match, Ayala wrestled Simeti of Roger Williams where he won again via fall this time in 3:49. Ayala then moved on to the third-place match for a rematch with Golner of the Doughboy Wrestling Club. Ayala fell again to Golner this time 8-4 to take fourth-place in the 165-pound weight class.
