Wrestling Places Three on NEWA Season Awards

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (April 4, 2022) – The New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) announced today their 2022 end of season awards, recognizing three from the Western New England University men's wrestling team.

In the 125 lb. weight class, senior Nick Arborio was recognized to the All-NEWA 1st team. Arborio competed in 42 matches on the season, reaching the NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships, held in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, where he finished the weight class in 7th place. On the season, Arborio won 37 of his 42 matches, winning 11 by pinfall, nine by tech-fall, picking up six major decision victories, and winning four regular decisions for the Golden Bears. Arborio is a two-time All-American at Western New England University. 

Receiving All-NEWA honorable mention in the 157 lb. weight class was Lucas Pinzino, who finished the 2021-2022 campaign with a 22-10 record for the Golden Bears. Pinzino collected six pinfall wins, four tech-fall victories, while also coming through with seven major decision wins and four regular decision wins for Western New England. Pinzino, the first year, was third on the Golden Bears in victories this season. 

Also receiving All-NEWA honorable mention for the Golden Bears was sophomore Darby McLaughlinMcLaughlin, who competed in the 197 lb. weight class, won 28 of his 36 matches during the season. McLaughlin won 13 of his 28 matches via pinfall, a team high. He also came away with one victory via tech-fall, nine major decision victories, also a team high, while picking up three regular decision wins as well. 

The Western New England men's wrestling team finished the 2022 campaign with an 8-7 record, while sending one to the NCAA National Championships. The Golden Bears will welcome women's wrestling to the mat in the 2022-2023 campaign.
