Western New England Opens Spring Break Trip With 8-1 Victory over Thomas

Golden Bears sweep through singles matches, claim two of three doubles results

HILTON HEAD, S.C. (March 11, 2017) – The Western New England University men's tennis team opened its spring break trip with an 8-1 victory over Thomas (Maine) College earlier today at the Chaplin Park Tennis Center.

Top Performers

• Western New England swept the six singles matches, with freshman Griffin Arnold's (Meriden, Conn.) 4-6, 6-2, 10-4 triumph over Mark Amato clinching the victory for the Golden Bears.
• Freshmen David Kalmer (Slingerlands, N.Y.) and Luke Surawski (Wethersfield, Conn.) and sophomore Justin Kohut (South Windsor, Conn.) led the way for Western New England, picking up victories in both singles and doubles action.

Match Review
• Kalmer (6-4, 6-4) and Surawski (6-0, 0-6, 6-4) earned wins at the No. 1 and No. 2 singles positions, respectively, while Kohut was a 7-6, 7-5, 6-2 winner at No. 3 singles. Sophomore Michael Tran (West Haven, Conn.) defeated Jared Waterhouse, 6-3, 6-3, at No. 4, and junior Nick Raschilla (East Longmeadow, Mass.) came out on top with a 6-4, 7-6, 7-4 result over Kaleb Payson at No. 5. Arnold rounded out Western New England's sweep with his victory at No. 6.
• Kalmer and Surawski teamed up for an 8-4 win over Thomas' duo of Zachary Disch/Ryan Chasse at No.1 doubles, and Kohut joined freshman Daniel O'Neill (Branford, Conn.) for an 8-5 win over Ross Munn/Payson at No. 2. The Terriers lone victory of the match came courtesy of their No. 3 doubles duo of Waterhouse/Amato, which collected a 9-7 result over Western New England junior Kevin Yawgel (Cromwell, Conn.) and senior Vu Nguyen (Springfield, Mass.).
