Golden Bears Notch 6-2 Non-Conference Win over Johnson & Wales
Surawski wins clincher 2-6, 7-5, 6-3 at No. 3 singles
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (April 11, 2017) – The Western New England University men's tennis team notched a 6-2, non-conference victory over Johnson & Wales University on Tuesday afternoon at the Volvo Outdoor Courts.
Top Performers
• Freshman Luke Surawski (Wethersfield, Conn.) clinched the match for the Golden Bears with his comeback victory over Ryan Schiele at No. 3 singles. Surawski dropped the opening set, 6-2, before claiming set two by a 7-5 score and sealing the win with a 6-3 result in the third set. The freshman also teamed up with sophomore Michael Tran (West Haven, Conn.) for an 8-5 win over Schiele and Taylor Farmer at No. 2 doubles.
Match Review
• In addition to Surawski and Tran's victory, freshman David Kalmer (Slingerlands, N.Y.) and sophomore Justin Kohut (South Windsor, Conn.) registered an 8-3 win at No. 1 doubles over Andre Barbero and Nicholas Auffret.
• Kalmer's No. 1 singles match was unfinished due to darkness, while Kohut defeated Auffret, 6-2, 6-4 at No. 2.
• Farmer topped Tran, 6-0, 6-4 at No. 4 singles, while freshman Griffin Arnold (Meriden, Conn.) and junior Kevin Yawgel (Cromwell, Conn.) were victorious in the No. 5 and 6 positions, respectively.

Western New England (5-7) will be back in action on Saturday with another non-conference match against Johnson State at the Volvo Courts at noon.
