Western New England Tops MCLA in Non-Conference Action, 9-0
LONGMEADOW, Mass. (April 21, 2017) – The Western New England University men's tennis team rolled to a 9-0 victory over the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts (MCLA) on Friday afternoon in non-conference action at Grande Meadows Athletic Club.
Top Performers
• Sophomores Michael Tran (West Haven, Conn.) and Justin Kohut (South Windsor, Conn.) and freshmen David Kalmer (Slingerlands, N.Y.) and Luke Surawski (Wethersfield, Conn.) all posted wins in both singles and doubles play.
Match Review
• Western New England swept through doubles play, as the No. 1 duo of Kohut/Kalmer and the No. 2 team of freshman Daniel O'Neill (Branford, Conn.) and Surawski both posted 8-1 wins. At No. 3 doubles, freshman Griffin Arnold (Meriden, Conn.) teamed up with Tran for an 8-3 victory.
• Kalmer topped Aaron Goldsmith at the top of the singles lineup, 6-0, 6-2, while Surawski earned a 6-0, 6-3 result over Robert Wabshinak at No. 2.
• In the No. 3 spot, Tran cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Andrew Nygard, and Arnold posted a 6-2, 6-3 triumph against Jeffrey Mason at No. 4.
• Junior Kevin Yawgel (Cromwell, Conn.) defeated Robert Gair by a 6-0, 6-0 score at No. 5, and classmate Joe Martoccia (Hartford, Conn.) registered a 6-2, 6-3 win over Jack Peterson at No. 6.
Up Next
Western New England (7-8) will be on the road tomorrow with a CCC match against Wentworth at Regis College, while MCLA (3-5) returns home to host Green Mountain on Sunday.
