Golden Bears Set Program Records En Route to Second Place Finish at 34th Duke Nelson Invitational

Western New England establishes new marks for single-round (282) and two-day (573) scores

MIDDLEBURY, Vt. (September 17, 2017) – The Western New England University men's golf team set a pair of program records on its way to a second place finish over the weekend at the 34th Duke Nelson Invitational, hosted by Middlebury College at Ralph Myhre Golf Course. 

The Golden Bears, who sat in fourth place following round one action on Saturday after posting a stellar score of 291, followed that up on Sunday with a single-round program record score of 282. Western New England's two-day total of 573, which also represents a new team record, placed the Golden Bears second overall in the strong 22-team field, just one stroke off the mark set by first-place Babson College (572). Trinity College (577), Williams College (582) and Tufts University (595) rounded out the top-five. Babson's Lane Bohman turned in a score of 70 in both rounds to claim medalist honors.

Top Performers
• Senior Joe Ciolek (South Hadley, Mass.) led the way for the Golden Bears, finishing second overall in the 113-player field with a two-round score of 142. Ciolek followed up his one-over par 72 on Saturday with a one-under 70 on Sunday, which was tied for the lowest single-round score of the weekend.
• Senior John Abbott (Higganum, Conn.) and freshman Tyler Sinacola (North Attleboro, Mass.) also played key roles in Western New England's historic performance, finishing tied for third with matching scores of 143. Abbott matched Ciolek with a 70 on Sunday after posting a score of 73 on Saturday, while Sinacola carded a 72 and 71 in rounds one and two, respectively.
• Senior Mike Metcalf (Longmeadow, Mass.) turned in an even-par 71 on Sunday after firing a three-over 74 during Saturday's opening round. Metcalf finished tied for 12th overall with a two-day total of 145.
• Freshman Ryan Zogby (New Hartford, N.Y.) posted scores of 75 and 76, which placed him in a tie for 42nd with an overall score of 151.
