Golden Bears Place Second at CCC Fall Qualifier

Led by medalist John Abbott, Western New England secures spot in next spring's CCC Championship

PORTSMOUTH, R.I. (October 5, 2017) –
The Western New England University men's golf team finished second among seven teams at the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Fall Qualifier on Thursday at Montaup Country Club. 

With their second place finish, the Golden Bears secure a spot in next spring's CCC Championship, which will be hosted by Endicott College. The Gulls earned hosting duties with their first place finish (300), while Western New England (311), Roger Williams (316) and Nichols (318) will also be competing for the CCC title next April after placing second, third and fourth, respectively.

Top Performers
• Senior John Abbott (Higganum, Conn.) was the top individual finisher in the field of 35, as he shot a one-under par 70 to claim medalist honors. Abbott's score was aided by a hole-in-one on the par three sixth hole. 
• Senior Joe Ciolek (South Hadley, Mass.) placed fourth overall after carding a four-over 75. Ciolek tied for the tournament lead with four birdies.

Also Competing for Western New England
• Freshman Tyler Sinacola (North Attleboro, Mass.) and senior Mike Metcalf (Longmeadow, Mass.) tied for 23rd with scores of 83, while freshman Ryan Zogby (New Hartford, N.Y.) finished one stroke back (84) in a tie for 25th.
