Western New England Leading the Field After Opening Round of Wildcat Spring Invitational

Abbott sits atop individual leaderboard with two-over par 73

CRANSTON, R.I. (April 21, 2018) –
Led by a trio of top-ten individual performances, the Western New England University men's golf team is leading the 19-team field following the opening round of the Wildcat Spring Invitational on Saturday at Cranston Country Club.

The Golden Bears have a three-stroke lead over second place Husson University after turning in a team score of 306 in round one. Division I Providence College sits in third (315), while Salem State (319) and Rhode Island College (321) round out the top five.

Western New England's success on Saturday was fueled by senior John Abbott (Higganum, Conn.), who is alone atop the 88-player field after carding a two-over par 73.

Senior Joe Ciolek (South Hadley, Mass.) and freshman Cameron Cox (Bowdoinham, Maine) are tied for 8th place after shooting 77s, while freshman Ryan Zogby (New Hartford, N.Y.) fired an opening round 79, good for a tie for 19th.

Also competing for the Golden Bears was senior Mike Metcalf (Longmeadow, Mass.), who is tied for 41st with a score of 82.
