Golden Bears Shoot Opening Round 316 at NCAA Championships

Play suspended due to thunder and lightning

GREENSBORO, N.C. (May 15, 2018) –
The Western New England University men's golf team turned in a score of 316 on the opening day of the NCAA Division III Championships before play was suspended due to stormy weather on Tuesday at Grandover Resort.

Thunder and lightning forced the suspension of play at 4:30 p.m., with roughly half of the 217-player field having completed the tournament's opening 18 holes.

Senior Joe Ciolek (South Hadley, Mass.) led the way for the Golden Bears with a first round score of 77 (+5) on the par 72, 7,150-yard course. Ciolek birded the par-4 eighth hole but had six bogeys on the day.

Making his NCAA Championship debut, freshman Ryan Zogby (New Hartford, N.Y.) posted a pair of birdies on his way to a seven-over par 79.

Senior John Abbott (Higganum, Conn.) also carded an opening round 79, while classmate Mike Metcalf (Longmeadow, Mass.) shot an 81 and freshman Cameron Cox (Bowdoinham, Maine) recorded an 83.

The first round is slated to resume on Tuesday morning at 8:00 a.m. Tuesday's regularly scheduled second round begins at approximately 11:00 a.m. with a shotgun start on Grandover's East and West Courses.
