Abbott Claims Medalist Honors as Western New England Finishes Second at Wildcat Spring Invitational

Golden Bears post team score of 614

CRANSTON, R.I. (April 22, 2018) –
Senior John Abbott (Higganum, Conn.) claimed medalist honors as the Western New England University men's golf team turned in a second place finish at the Johnson & Wales University Wildcat Spring Invitational following round two action on Sunday at Cranston Country Club. 

The Golden Bears, who led the 19-team field with a score of 306 on Saturday, turned in a 308 during the second round on their way to second place with a total of 614. Husson, which trailed Western New England by three strokes entering Sunday's action, posted a score of 293 to capture the title by 12 strokes (602). Providence College finished third (629), while Salem State (632) and Endicott (634) rounded out the top five.

Abbott followed up Saturday's two-over par 73 with an identical score on Sunday. He edged out Endicott's Athan Goulas and Husson's Mackenzie Clow by three strokes with a score of 146, which topped the 99-golfer field.

Senior Joe Ciolek (South Hadley, Mass.), who sat in eighth place with a round one 77, dropped into a tie for 12th after carding a 79 on Sunday.

Freshman Cameron Cox (Bowdoinham, Maine) followed up Saturday's 77 with an 80 in round two and fell from eighth to 14th with a combined score of 157.

Senior Mike Metcalf (Longmeadow, Mass.) climbed all the way from 41st to 21st with a six-stroke improvement, as he turned in a round two score of 76 after posting an 82 on Saturday.

Freshman Ryan Zogby (New Hartford, N.Y.) finished 36th overall with scores of 79 and 82 for a total of 161 over the two-day event.
