Newall Nets Four in 14-7 Rout of Coast Guard

NEW LONDON, Conn. (February 27, 2022) – The Western New England men's lacrosse team led by as many as eight goals on the afternoon in the 14-7 victory over the United States Coast Guard Academy on Sunday on the road. 

Records:

  • Western New England: 3-0
  • Coast Guard: 0-2

How it Happened:

As they did in their non-conference victory over Keene State on Wednesday afternoon, the Golden Bears got off to a quick start off the faceoff after Coast Guard failed to take a shot on goal on their first possession of the game. Western New England would score on their first possession of the game when Conor Tracy opened the scoring for the Golden Bears. Western New England would extend their lead shortly after when Noah Rust picked up his first goal of the season to extend their lead to 2-0. After a sequence of no goal in ten minutes, the Golden Bears relied heavily on Carter Randall, who made six first quarter saves for WNE. Coast Guard would break the zero on the scoreboard for USCG as Ian Feely scored to push the score to 2-1. With just 59 seconds in the quarter, Brian Madden would score for WNE, sending the teams to a 3-1 score after 15 minutes of play, favoring the Golden Bears.

The second quarter would be largely dominated by Western New England as they would score three of the four goals, including three straight in the second to lead 6-2 at the half. Jared Newall would score back-to-back goals in 26 seconds, with assists from Mike Bannon and Jamaurie James to continue their dominance on the field. Randall would come away with an added for saves to make it ten through 30 minutes of play. WNE scooped 17 ground balls in the quarter, while taking 16 total shots. Coast Guard ripped 31 shots towards goal, finding just 12 go on target. 

The Golden Bears would open the third quarter with six straight goals to put Coast Guard out of the game quickly. Newall, Bannon, Mitch Weiss, and Matt Greer would all contribute for the Golden Bears in the quarter, giving the Golden Bears a nine-goal lead at one point before Coast Guard was able to find twine with just seven seconds remaining in the third, trailing 11-3 after the 45 minutes of play. Coast Guard would score three straight in the fourth quarter to get the game to as low as a five-goal lead before Tracy was able to rip a shot that found the back of the net to give WNE an insurance goal. Joseph Contino and Newall would end the game with goals for WNE as the Golden Bears would take down Coast Guard by a final score of 14-7. 

Inside the Lines: 

  • Jared Newall score four goals and added an assist to lead the Golden Bears on the afternoon. Conor Tracy and Mike Bannon would both collect two goals each in the win. 
  • Carter Randall made 14 saves on 21 shots on goal faced, improving to a 3-0 record this season. 
  • Coast Guard outshot the Golden Bears in total, 57-34, though the Golden Bears were much more accurate with shots on target. 
  • The Golden Bears scooped 37 total ground balls and caused 13 turnovers in the win as a team.
