SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (March 23, 2022) – The Western New England men's lacrosse team put forth a promising first quarter against the undefeated Bowdoin College Polar Bears, though saw Bowdoin rip off six straight goals to close the second quarter and could never mount a comeback in the second half, allowing a season high 23 goals in a 23-16 loss in non-conference action. Jared Newall ripped six goals for WNE in the loss.

Records:

  • Western New England: 4-3
  • Bowdoin College: 6-0

How it Happened:

Western New England got off to a brilliant start in the first quarter, looking to be the first demise of the season to the Polar Bears. After a five-minute stretch of good play by both teams, the Golden Bears opened the scoring in the game as Dylan Hanley found the back of the goal to give Western New England an early 1-0 lead. Bowdoin would answer just 43 seconds later as their leading scorer, Will Byrne would collect a tally on an assist from Zach Chandler to give the Polar Bears their first marking of the game. Western New England would fight back and score the next three goals in less than two minutes of gameplay to take a 4-1 lead. Conor Tracy would get the run started for the Golden Bears, ripping an unassisted tally past GK Robert Hobbs. Jared Newall would pick up his first of the night for WNE just 41 seconds after the Tracy tally, while Matt Greer would pick up an assist on the tally and a goal on the next shot on goal for WNE to give the Golden Bears the three-goal lead. Bowdoin would answer with a late marking with 25 seconds to play to end the first 15 minutes of play at 4-2. Carter Randall made two first quarter saves as the Polar Bears would outshoot the Golden Bears 10-8.

The Golden Bears would score the first three of four goals in the opening five minutes of the contest as Hanley would pick up his second tally of the game on an assist from Noah Rust just 45 seconds into the quarter. Brian Madden would pick up an unassisted tally for WNE, while Newall came away with a goal on a helper from Murphy Hartmann, giving Western New England a 7-3 lead with ten minutes to play. The Polar Bears would take exception to the goals from Western New England and would rip off the next six goals to end the second quarter, taking a 9-7 lead after 30 minutes of play. The Polar Bears would outshoot Western New England 14-10 in the quarter, coming away with seven of the ten goals in the quarter.

The third quarter between the two teams saw the two teams bounce back and forth, exchanging goal for goal through the first six goals of the contest. Newall (2), and Ben Kolb would score for Western New England as the Golden Bears would cut Bowdoin's lead to just a single goal with the score marking 11-10. From there, Bowdoin would score three straight, going ahead by four goals before Tracy would stop the streak. Bowdoin would close the final four minutes of the third quarter with three more goals, ending the quarter with a 17-11 lead.

11 fourth quarter goals would favor the Polar Bears, as Western New England would be unable to pull within a tie again in the contest. Madden would open the fourth quarter with two straight tallies, but as they did all night long, the Polar Bears would respond with two goals of their own. The Polar Bears would close out the Golden Bears with four of the final six goals of the contest, sending Western New England to their third straight non-conference loss of the season, finalizing the score at 23-16.
