Men’s Lacrosse Taken Down in Second Game of Florida Schedule

TAMPA, Florida (March 17, 2022) – The Western New England men's lacrosse team dropped their second game in a row in Florida, falling to the Nazareth College Golden Flyers by a final score of 22-15. 

Records:

  • Western New England: 4-2
  • Nazareth College: 2-4

How it Happened:

The Golden Bears would struggle on the night, unable to build any sort of lead in the contest as the Golden Flyers would get off to a quick start, ripping two goals off in the first two minutes of the game to go ahead 2-0. Western New England would get on the board with 12:36 remaining in the first quarter when Mike Bannon unleashed a shot on an assist from Joseph Contino, cutting Nazareth's lead to just a single goal. The Golden Flyers would come away with another quick two goals, however, putting them ahead by three, their largest lead of the first quarter thus far. Bannon would dial up another goal for WNE, which was then followed up by Jared Newall on an assist from Conor Tracy to get Western New England back within one goal of the tie. Nazareth would come back and score three goals in the final 5:29 on the first quarter, taking a 7-3 lead after 15 minutes of play. Nazareth outshot Western New England 10-9 in the opening 15 minutes, while Carter Randall made one save in the quarter. 

Seven goals were scored in the second quarter, as Western New England would come up with just three of those, continuing to trail throughout the contest. Newall on an assist from Matt Greer would find the back of the net for his second goal of the game just 2:24 into the second quarter, giving the Golden Bears their fourth goal of the game. The Golden Flyers came away with three straight goals, including two that came 12 seconds apart as Nazareth continued to be all over the Golden Bears defense on the night. Tracy would bury a goal with 3:38 to play while Newall would find twine for his third of the night, sending WNE to a 11-6 deficit after 30 minutes of play. Western New England would outshoot the Golden Flyers 15-10 in the second quarter, though Nazareth came through with four goals in the quarter, marking 11 for the half. 

Nazareth opened the third quarter with three quick markers, two while on the advantage, giving them an eight-goal lead, their biggest of the contest. Western New England would come through for just two goals in the quarter, putting the game virtually out of reach. Tracy and Bannon would collect the only tallies of the quarter for WNE as Nazareth would outshoot the Golden Bears 17-9 in the quarter, scoring six to Western New England's two. 

Western New England would be down by as many as 11 in the final quarter before picking up the final four goals of the night to finalize the score at 22-15. In the quarter, Greer would come through with a tally with 10:09 to play, picking up WNE's 9th goal of the night. TJ Dalicandro found the back of the net for Western New England's 10th goal. Ending the night with goals were Dylan Hanley, Jack Seiter, Mike Bannon, and Jared Newall, as the Golden Bears would suffer their second straight loss, falling to the Golden Flyers by a final score of 22-15 from Tampa. 

Inside the Arc:

  • Seven different goal scorers for WNE combined for 15 goals on the night. Mike Bannon led the way for Western New England, dialing up five goals while Jared Newall came away with four WNE goals. 
  • Matt Greer picked up a goal as well as five assists in the loss for Western New England, taking five shots, three on goal. 
  • Mitch Weiss caused four turnovers for Western New England; a team high. 
  • Carter Randall surrendered 18 goals while making nine saves in 45 minutes of action. Jonathon Salsbury came if relief, allowing the final four Nazareth goals of the night. 
  • Western New England took 51 shots to Nazareth's 44 on the night.
