Men’s Lacrosse Continues Dominance in CCC Play With 17-4 Win over Curry

MILTON, Mass. (March 31, 2022) – The Western New England men's lacrosse team scored the first nine goals of the contest, on their way to a 17-4 win over the Colonels of Curry College on Thursday evening. WNE saw Jared Newall lace five goals while Dylan Hanley netted three goals and picked up an assist in the win. 

Records:

  • Western New England: 6-4, 2-0 CCC
  • Curry College: 3-7, 0-2 CCC

How it Happened:

Western New England found the back of the net the first nine times in the game before the Colonels came away with their first goal. Western New England quickly went up 5-0 after one quarter. Mike Bannon led the game off with an unassisted goal with 10:06 remaining in the quarter, while Jared Newall scored the Golden Bears second goal of the game from Ben Kolb, sending WNE to a quick 2-0 lead. The pressure continued for the Golden Bears as Matt Greer found the Golden Bears third goal of the game with just over five minutes to play. Conor Tracy and Dylan Hanley would score unassisted tallies in the final 1:25 of the quarter as WNE led by five after one. Carter Randall made three saves in the first quarter. 

The Golden Bears continued the pressure and poured goals on the Colonels, going up 9-0 in the second quarter. Brian MaddenHanley, and Newall (2) found the back of the goal with just under seven minutes remaining in the quarter to give WNE that big nine goal lead. A small comeback from the Colonels would spark two straight in 1:02 for Curry as Tim Sullivan netted both for the hosts, sending WNE back to a seven-goal lead. Newall would add an insurance goal with one second remaining in the half, giving WNE a 10-2 lead. Western New England outshot the Colonels 22-15 in the first half. Curry came away with 11/13 faceoff wins in the half. 

Newall would open the third quarter with a goal followed by another Hanley goal, while Ben Kolb would wrap up a 3-0 start to the third quarter to give WNE a 13-2 lead. WNE would score five of the six goals in the quarter, with Noah Rust and Madden coming away with the final two in the quarter to lead 15-3 after 45 minutes of play. Randall made an additional four saves to close his night with nine saves. 

Just three goals were scored in the final 15 minutes of play, two belonging to the Golden Bears. James Wrynn and Conor Tracy allied marks for Western New England as Curry could add just one in the final 15 minutes of play. Western New England would walk away with a 17-4 victory, their second CCC win of the season. Jonathon Salsbury made four saves on five shots faced in the 4th quarter. 

Inside the Lines:

  • WNE outshot Curry 44-33 in the win. The Colonels scooped one extra ground ball, 29 to WNE's 28 in the loss. 
  • Jared Newall put up five additional goals, including the 100th of his career in the win on the night. Newall now has 38 goals on the season, a career high. 
  • Dylan Hanley scored three times and had one assist for the Golden Bears in the winning effort. 
  • Curry was led by Sawyer Allen, who went 20/24 in the faceoff circle and collected 13 groundballs.
