Men’s Lacrosse Stunned at Springfield College

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (April 5, 2022) – The Western New England men's lacrosse team wrapped up the final non-conference game of the season, falling to their cross-town rival Pride of Springfield College by a final score of 17-12.

Records:

  • Western New England: 6-5
  • Springfield College: 5-6

How it Happened:

WNE, who was looking to big up their first conference win since they started off the season 3-0 in non-conference action, fell short of their goal early and could never come through with a lead in the contest. The Pride went up 2-0 at the beginning of the game when both Joe Maimone and Alek Turi scored for Springfield College to get them ahead 2-0. Dylan Hanley would open the scoring for Western New England in the first quarter with eight minutes to play on the clock. WNE would fail to tie the game, as Springfield came away with the next goal of the quarter, responding just 1:07 after Hanley's goal. Matt Greer would pick up his first goal of the night with just over a minute to play to get back within one goal. The Pride would deliver a heartbreaker as Alek Turi scored as time expired to give the Pride a 4-2 lead after one quarter of play. The shots stayed even after one quarter of playing, knotted up at ten each.

The Golden Bears would see the better of the scoring chances in the second quarter, tying the game back up for the first time in the contest. After the Pride opened the scoring in the quarter, Western New England would come away with three straight goals to tie the game at five. Brian Madden, Conor Tracy, and Jared Newall would all find the back of the net in less than a minute of game action to tie the game at five. Springfield College would respond with four straight goals to take a big four goal lead, their highest lead of the contest thus far. WNE would grab a late tally from Madden to enter halftime with a 9-6 deficit. Carter Randall made two saves in the first half.

The Golden Bears made a valiant effort to open the third quarter, making a comeback and tying the contest again after grabbing the first three goals of the third quarter. Greer and Ben Kolb would pick up goals for Western New England that would tie the game at nine with six minutes to play. As they did all night long, the Pride would fight back, not allowing the Golden Bears to lead at any point in the contest. Two goals in the final three and a half minutes of the third quarter would give Springfield College a two-goal lead after three quarters of play. Springfield's Dean Pesce made seven saves in the quarter, while Randall came away with four, a game high for him.

As they did in the last two quarters, Western New England would come back and tie the game as Newall and Murphy Hartmann would pick up goals to even the score at 11 early in the quarter. From there, it would be all Springfield, as they would rip off the final six of seven tallies in the contest to take down Western New England by a final score of 17-12.
