Western New England Falls to No. 6 Haverford, 5-0, in 2016 Opener

Golden Bears will be back in action tomorrow against John Carroll at 1:30 p.m.

WALTHAM, Mass. (September 3, 2016) – The Western New England University men's soccer team suffered a 5-0 setback to No. 6 nationally ranked Haverford College this afternoon in its 2016 season opener as part of the Brandeis Invitational at Gordon Field.

Top Performers
Although the Golden Bears were unable to find the back of the net, they did record 11 shots, including a team-high four by senior defender Brandon Bolger (Saratoga, N.Y.).

Junior Ben Field (Portland, Ore.) fueled the Haverford attack with two goals and an assist, all of which came in the first 15 minutes of action as the Fords opened up an early 3-0 lead.

Game Review
Field opened the scoring in the 10th minute, when he fired a shot past Western New England senior goalkeeper Kevin Strobel (Rockland, Mass.) after streaking down the left flank.
Field then set up freshman forward Nick Jannelli (Springfield, Pa.) for the game's second goal at the 13:35 mark, before netting another goal himself just over a minute later.
Haverford added second half goals in the 53rd and 83rd minutes to complete the scoring.

Notes
Haverford is ranked No. 6 in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) preseason poll after an 18-4 campaign last fall.
The Golden Bears outshot Haverford 8-5 in the first half and also held a 7-4 advantage in corner kicks over the opening 45 minutes.
