Wentworth Scores Three Unanswered Goals in 3-1 Win over Golden Bears

Junior Troy Remillard nets team-leading seventh goal of the season for Western New England

BOSTON, Mass. (October 1, 2016) – The Wentworth Institute of Technology men's soccer team scored three unanswered goals on its way to a 3-1 victory over Western New England University this afternoon in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action at Sweeney Field.

Top Performers
• Junior forward Troy Remillard (Palmer, Mass.) scored the opener for Western New England in the 18th minute, his team-leading seventh goal of the season. Remillard also led the Golden Bears in both shots (five) and shots on target (four).

• Junior midfielder Emmett Basaca (San Diego, Calif.) and sophomore forward Noah Martins (Dartmouth, Mass.) led Wentworth with one goal and one assist each.

Match Review
• Western New England junior midfielder Logan Pingree (Middletown, Conn.) set up Remillard for the game's opening goal 17:23 into the contest. Pingree threaded a ball down the middle of the field to Remillard, who beat Wentworth sophomore goalkeeper Matthew Sekerak (Winthrop, Maine) with a shot to the left side of the net.
• The Leopards equalized less than three minutes later, however, as junior defender Joe Kalil (Franklin, Mass.) headed home a corner kick taken by Basaca at the 20:15 mark.
• Wentworth then pulled ahead in the 24th minute on another corner kick play, when senior Matt Sanchez (Salem, N.H.) came up with a loose ball and fed Martins for the go-ahead goal.
• Just one minute into the second half, Basaca gave the Leopards a 3-0 lead after receiving a pass from Martins.
• Western New England challenged Wentworth sophomore goalkeeper Joe Schallmo (Norwood, Mass.) with three shots on frame the rest of the way, but the Golden Bears were unable to cut into their two-goal deficit.

Notes
• Remillard's goal today gives him four over his last two matches, as the junior registered his first career hat trick in Wednesday's 4-3 win over Keene State.
• After being outshot 11-7 in the first half, Western New England held a 9-6 edge in shots over the final 45 minutes, and the Golden Bears also took four corner kicks to Wentworth's one.
• Strobel made four saves in each half, finishing with eight stops for the contest. Schallmo made seven saves for Wentworth.

Western New England (4-7, 2-2 CCC) returns home to host Elms College on Tuesday afternoon, while Wentworth (7-2-3, 3-0-1 CCC) will be on the road at WPI on Wednesday.
