Western New England Secures No. 4 Seed in CCC Tournament with 2-0 Win at Nichols

Golden Bears will open CCC Tournament at home against Roger Williams on Saturday

DUDLEY, Mass. (October 26, 2016) – The Western New England University men's soccer team capped its regular season schedule with a 2-0 shutout victory at Nichols College this afternoon in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action. 

Top Performers
• Junior forward Troy Remillard (Palmer, Mass.) and sophomore midfielder Nick Liccardi (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) each scored first half goals for the Golden Bears, while senior goalkeeper Kevin Strobel (Rockland, Mass.) registered a five-save shutout.

Match Review
• Liccardi got Western New England on the board in the 22nd minute with his second goal of the season. After junior midfielder Logan Pingree's (Middletown, Conn.) shot was blocked, Liccardi one-timed the rebound into the lower left corner of the net.
• The Golden Bears made it 2-0 in the 34th minute following a throw in by senior midfielder Ryan Dickinson (South Hadley, Mass.), as senior defender Brandon Bolger (Saratoga, N.Y.) flicked a pass back to Remillard and the junior fired a shot past Nichols sophomore goalkeeper Patrick Porpora (Westminster, Mass.) and into the back of the net.
• Strobel stopped both of the shots that he faced in the second half to preserve the victory for the Golden Bears.

Notes
• Western New England's win gives the Golden Bears their first three-game winning streak of the season, and brings the team's record to .500 for the first time this fall.
• Strobel's shutout marks his second consecutive clean sheet, fifth of the season and 14th of his career.
• Remillard's goal ups his team-leading total to 11. The junior also leads the Golden Bears with 25 points this season.
• Western New England outshot Nichols 12-9 over the first 45 minutes, but the Bison held a 10-4 advantage during the second half. Nichols also took four corner kicks to Western New England's one.

Western New England (9-9, 6-3 CCC), which will open the upcoming CCC Tournament as the No. 4 seed at home on Saturday, will host fifth-seeded Roger Williams at noon. Nichols (8-7-2, 4-4-1) earns the No. 6 seed and will travel to third-seeded Gordon for the CCC Quarterfinals.
